On Ubuntu/Lucid, you should be able to install both the 'puredata' package and the 0.42.5-rc3 package.
But how do I then tell it which one to run?
run "pd" to run pd. run "pdextended" to run pdextended.
i have a "puredata" package in the queue that will use "puredata" as the binary to run, and divert to "pd". pd-extended should do the same then, so the user can chose their flavour of "pd"
