in my external GUIs I use flags so users can set just what they want without filling in all the arguments and remembering the order, as in iemguis

That's actually a good argument. With IEM GUIs, the argument list is so
long that it is not really practical to type it out, but with gatoms
this could be a nice shortcut, for example, to create a float atom with
send/receive names without opening the properties.
