Quicktime is a little tricky, as you have to sync different timebases (QTUnits) of playback for different tracks. The XML format ensures sample accurate playback for the frame number of the movie you are on (it lists the QT rate of each track). Otherwise the two will be out of sync. Dead chicken or not, something like that is needed.

Their solution is to automatically extract an AIFF, make an XML file, and load it into a buffer~ which can then be sent to MSP tilde land. Well, the weirdest part is "make an XML file", as if this had anything to do with solving the problem at hand. It's sort of like "wave a dead chicken".
