oh, jeeze.. yes!! i totally agree. it actuallly disables using an array as a gui element, which sometimes could be very fun.
you could just start drawing on it.
actually it was like this is in earlier versions of pd, i can't recall, which exactly (probably <= 0.36?). iirc, the goal for the change was, that you could have several arrays in the same graph and still draw on each one of them, not only on the topmost. since i never use that feature, i feel the pain as well. don't know what others think/do, though.
