Pulseaudio is... err, a mess, imho. Go for jack - install jackd and qjackctl if needed. It will most likely work, or if not, it will give you detailed error messages
Just for the sake of completeness (I personally also prefer the jack way):
$ pasuspender pd
This way you can have direct access to the audio hardware, which is otherwise occupied by pulseaudio.
