On an Acer Aspire Centrino laptop, when I want to install either Linux Debian or Ubuntu (Debian-based), the computer freezes after "Uncompressing Linux ........ Ok, booting the kernel".
Sometimes, not always, after the computer freezes a list of "FATAL modprobe xxxxxx" messages prints continuously on the screen, telling that some files are missing.
As it's getting way off-topic for pd-list, I would recommend to study some linux-laptop specicific site/lists/forums, but did you try some of the more advanced boot option? One favourite of mine is "noapic" or (for installing) the "acpi=off" option. Also there are some video-related option that could help.
Laptops are strange beasts.
