Hey all,
This is a timely thread as I have been interested in interfacing the telephone network to PD as well.
What I'm looking to do is have PD answer the phone. PD will probably just end up doing a recording of the message (ala HCS's idea for a PD answering machine)
The reason for this is so that people who do not have access to the internet could use a long-distance call to contribute stories to the evolving stories system.
Anyhow what HW is needed for this?
Whats the sip adapter for? Can you get telephone signal just from the modem? (I imagine that would require some special modem with an audio-out jack..)
Anyhow a newbite telephony run down would be handy for me.
Thanks

Use a VoIP account and eliminate:
telephon-->sip-adapter-->modem-->
Then anyone can call your VoIP number and asterisk will answer. I've done a few projects with asterisk (here's one: http://whitmanlocalreport.net ) and its auite a system. I'd be interested to see what you come up with, since I am planning on making a Pd-powered answering machine.
There might also be a way that you can have asterisk talk directly to Pd. The "AGI" stuff, basically like CGI for asterisk, is general enough that it should be able to talk directly to Pd. That'd be a nice set of objects to have: Asterisk for Pd. They could be written totally in Pd, I think.

eo list, i want to start a project with analog-telephons and pd. Has anyone some experiences with it? I think this way would be possible: telephon-->sip-adapter-->modem-->asterisk-->python-->py-->puredata.. ufff!
but im neither experienced with asterisk nor with python, is there a easyer way to communicate (analog-)telephon-->pd?
