Ok, I was not aware of what deken was supposed to handle and what not. Sorry for not being very specific. Before installing gpg, it fails with:

well, if you are getting a backtrace (and the log files show one), then you clearly do not 'simply get a "WARNING"'. so you had no way of knowing what to do.
however, only *now* i have at least an error (the backtrace) with which I can start to debug the underlying problem (and a confirmation that the suggested workflow (GPG Suite) indeed fixese the problem).
