You'll be better off if you don't modify the package. Then you can
easily upgrade without worrying about tracking the changes that you
might have made. Instead, you should choose a folder to install your
own stuff, and add your patches there. Something like ~/Library/Pd/
extra and ~/Library/Pd/help.
Then they'll still be there when you upgrade your Pd.app.

by the way, if you're using the os x package, you have to right click on the icon and select "show package contents" to get into the directory folder. then you open "resources"..the "extra" folder is in there.
