Thanks very much Chris, I finally got it to work after following
Slimfatboyslim's instructions.

I'm trying to install GEM in Mac OSX. I
got a copy of
Gem.pd_darwin and placed in the PD.app/Contents/Resources/Extra
folder (following the install instructions from the site where I
got Gem.pd_darwin from).
The install instructions also told me to run the command ./pd -nomidi
-noaudio -lib Gem from Terminal.
Those installation instructions refer
only to versions of Pd that are not application bundles or part of an
all-in-one installer. Use version 0.37 from Miller's site and
put Gem.pd_darwin in the pd/extra folder and use -lib Gem. That
will work fine.
I suppose an alternate method would be to
put the exact path to Gem.pd_darwin in your .pdrc or script.
