use paradiddle + netreceive. It makes working with PD aesthetically pleasing and not as resource intensive to load tcl/tk front end. Plus you get a multithreaded gui for free (so to speak)

that is of course, that you are using OS X...

Data structures recently got "visibility" switches, which could open
an interesting new way of workarounds here. Imagine you build a
clickable area, either using [tot] or an array of radio buttons, maybe
hidden with a canvas. On top of them, you could put your data
structures whose visibility is then switched on and off according to
mouse actions.
