GEM and MSP seem to be 2 different things ...
Considering that David Z. hasn't done anything about graphics
in Max since the 80's (check out LCD object which is simply
a _very_ primitive way of accessing some very basic commands
in the Macintosh Toolbox) I wouldn't count on much...
...especially if he's busy porting MAX/MSP to WindozeNT and BeOS
(in the near future apparently...)
I would like to see some Mac/Linux geek to fix the MkLinux
behaviour for MIDI and Audio.

yes, thanx! someone said they're using a p-200 and it works fine; so far
i've tried it on an Indy and a p-100 with 24M RAM. The p-100 is pretty
sluggish (window draws and cursor movements were really slow when i had 2
patches open at once, cos.pd and fm.pd, i think). However, it actually
never crashed whereas the Indy dumped core a few times...
btw, roughly how many pd users are there? does anyone have an idea?
thanx again,

This will be possible with sfread, but only from harddisk (or Data CD).
As I recall reading audio streams from CD needs special treatment and isnŽt
supported
by all IDE CDROM drives ...

To keep pd free, all the sources which are included should be free too. (See the
problems
with the fiddle external).
the xaudio library is shareware ...

Thank you, added to my (yet to be official) web page.

In theory it shouldn't be too bad to do, especially since the Mac has
OpenGL support these days. GEM was originally created on
Max/FTS...although that was four years ago.

Is there any work currently being done to make Pd patchs be compatable
with Max/MSP? And on a minor note is David Z thinking about adding some
of the funcionality of GEM to MSP?

I don't know if we have any Macintosh hackers out there, but Paul
Ossenbruggen has a very, very, very alpha version of Pd running on the
Mac OS. It is slow as pond water, lots of features are missing, etc.
but you can add two numbers together :-)
I know that Paul hasn't had any time to work on it lately, so if
anyone wants to give it a shot, let me know. I'll hook you up with Paul
and the source code. Obviously, Pd/GEM should be much easier on
Carbon/OS X, so you might just want to skip 8.5...

In the source code for GEM, there is a library for playing mpegs.
Look in the AuxLibs section. However, I haven't integrated it into GEM
yet, although it is on my "list of things to do". The question is
when...
In the short run, you need to use pix_multiimage

i published my pdlib and one gem example movie on my webserver..
(still undocumentated)
this page is to provide pd and gem patches/libs/movies/sound only.
i think it would be more usefull if there are many automon pages
instead of only one official page... like a decentral system.
but in this case there sill a need for some coordination.

I don't know what the real numbers are either, but currently about 5
people download GEM a day. Considering that it has been up for a couple
of years now, my guess is that a thousand people have downloaded
Pd/GEM...but I don't know how many people are actively using them.
Also, I have always said that I would be more than willing to provide
a page for Pd/GEM resources. If any one has anything (example patches,
demos, externals, abstractions, etc), let me know and I'll create an
area for it.
