...where/why are these being generated (scons?), and how can I get rid of 'em? I doubt I need that much object coverage...

Yes, scons produces these as a result of caching for different compile options. I also find this annoying but haven't spent time on avoiding it.

it's a compile cache, you can safely delete them ...

Yes. Authors of scons have figured out one way to get builds to waste even more diskspace and to make forcing of the rebuild of a file need more than just removing that file. It creates a backup of that file in that huge-ass database with directories named 0 to F.
and how can I get rid of 'em?
