It seems that Günter is no longer updating the 'puredata' package, so I wanted to start the process of updating it. I am working on becoming a Debian Maintainer, so I can get direct upload access.
This is what I would like to address: - improved puredata.desktop for file associations, etc. - built against Tcl/Tk 8.5
I just committed the files from http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/pool/main/p/puredata/puredata_0.41.4-1.diff.... to update the old Debian files for this package. I think we should now work out of this spot in SVN:
http://pure-data.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/pure-data/trunk/packages/debian/

for what it is worth, there is an updated version on mentors.debian.net: http://mentors.debian.net/cgi-bin/sponsor-pkglist?action=details;package=pur...
it's lintian clean (unlike the old package) and fixes some pending bugs
- improved puredata.desktop for file associations, etc.
- built against Tcl/Tk 8.5
without these additions though.

Nice! Could you update the files in SVN packages/debian with yours? On the Debian side changing to Tcl/Tk 8.5 is easy, as long as people think its a good idea. :) 0.43 fully supports 8.5, but I am not sure how well 0.42.5 works on 8.5 If its easy to make work, we should do it, otherwise wait for 0.43.

We don't need the «puredata» package, because we have the «pd-extended» package, and that's enough for essentially everybody.
Why would you do it?

Maybe I am misunderstanding something, but if this is a question of being able to apt-get install vanilla Pd under Debian GNU/Linux, I would like to have that option rather than only having the option to install pd-extended.

The 'puredata' package is already in Debian and Ubuntu and has been for a while. That's pd-vanilla.

Oh! I assumed that that was the 'puredata' package you were referring to which GÃŒnter is no longer updating. Sorry for the misunderstanding, carry on.

?? hans is talking about the "puredata" package in Debian which GÃŒnter is no longer updating[*] and which is in fact pd-vanilla.

[*] in fact, Debian 'puredata' is 0.41.4, which is about as recent as the latest Pd-extended release. so the package is not really outdated (unlike the "gem" package in debian); however it seems clear that gÃŒnter does no longer find the time to update the packages himself. probably he could sponsor the uploads into mainline.

There is no pd-extended package in Debian and there never was. There are some debs for pd-extended on the build servers, but there also are many other Pd-based debs around, for example there are really good community-supported ones in pure:dyne.
