Otherwise, if others know better about using strip, especially on Mac OS X, please chime in.
well, i suppose that a lot of functions are added to the object file from the library in the linking process. strip removes all the symbols that refer to functions (and the functions) that are never called. so i suppose it is just reduces the size of the object. the i suppose that if you compile an external without the strip step, your file will work, but it will be much larger...
