Summary: GUI gets frozen
Initial Comment:
>From time to time (I haven't been able to isolate a set of steps that reproduces this), an error message like the following appears on the console:
(Tcl) INVALID COMMAND NAME: invalid command name ".c"
while executing
".c coords a7e9d8RCOVER 869 255 877 333"
("uplevel" body line 1)
invoked from within
"uplevel #0 $cmd_from_pd"
and suddenly ALL the gui elements of a certain type or of several types (e.g. all sliders and/or all toggles and/or all number boxes) stop working, meaning that they will stop responding to mouse interaction and stop being updated.
Here's another example of the error message:
(Tcl) INVALID COMMAND NAME: invalid command name ".x1814f00.c"
while executing
".x1814f00.c itemconfigure .x17a9308.t1809158R -fill blue"
("uplevel" body line 9287)
invoked from within
"uplevel #0 $cmd_from_pd"
This happens to me from time to time with very complex patches with a lot of GOP-enabled abstractions.
I'm sorry I can't provide a simple test patch but i think this was worth reporting as it is a complete show stopper.

Summary: PureData writing beyond t_object struct on Windows.
Initial Comment:
This very simple external provides a responder to a single message, "test". The object's data structure extends t_object by a single integer, "pad". I set "pad" to zero immediately after pd_new(). Later, when it receives "test", it prints "pad" again. On Linux, the log contains the following:
hello_new, x->pad: 0
hello_test, x->pad: 0
However, on Windows, the log contains this:
hello_new, x->pad: 0
hello_test, x->pad: 0x1
This means somewhere between initializing my object and receiving "test", the t_object structure is written to beyond its length.
This was noticed because in a real object I had a pointer in that location, which was invalidated by this effect, and dereferencing it caused PureData to crash. My temporary solution is to put a padding int there, but it would be nice to find the problem. I haven't yet managed to compile Pd from scratch for Windows yet, so I can't debug it until I get that working, but I thought I should report it in case anyone knows more.

Summary: Pd-0.43 crash with GOP enabled abstraction inside subpatch
Initial Comment:
I keep getting a serious crash if I'm ever using [soundoutput] inside a subpatch.
I can reproduce it by:
> Opening test.pd in Pd-0.43
> Open [pd SUBVIEW]
> Close [pd SUBVIEW]
> (Try to) close test.pd
Then I get the following error:
(Tcl) INVALID COMMAND NAME: invalid command name ".x321860.c"
white executing
".x321860.c delete l323af0"
("uplevel" body line 2)
invoked from with
"uplevel #0 $cmd_from_pd"
Then if I move the mouse on the test.pd window I get this error constantly:
.x191a6b0: no such object
I can still edit and save other patches but it's not really workable so it requires a restart of Pd.
I'm running Pd-0.43-0 on a MacBook Pro with OSX 10.6.7
Thanks,
Joe

Summary: focus on properties window
Initial Comment:
When opening the properties window for a canvas object, the window doesn't appear on focus. This is a small detail, but it bothers the workflow, because instead of just editing the fields with the keyboard only, it's necessary to make an extra action to get the focus of the properties window.
In previous versions, new windows (properties included) always had automatically the focus.

Summary: remove ifdef cruft for OSS files
Initial Comment:
s_audio_oss.c includes either <sys/soundcard.h> or <linux/soundcard.h>
since configure checks for <sys/soundcard.h> to detect whether OSS is available (and only builds this file if OSS is there), there is no need for this special ifdef cruft.
attached patch removes the ifdef

Summary: build-system fixes for kFreeBSD & HURD
Initial Comment:
while packaging puredata for debian, we noticed that the new build system does not detect and handle debian/kFreeBSD and GNU/hurd correctly.
attached patch (for configure.ac and src/Makefile.am) fixes the problems with these platforms
LATER: configure checks for pthread and libdl, but never uses the values; the attached patch hardcodes linker-flags to use those libraries on hurd, but on the long run, the configure results should be used regardless of the platform

Summary: make helpbrowser separate directories and patches
Initial Comment:
starting Pd(0.43) with custom search paths (e.g. "-path /path/to/Gem), results in a not-so-nice help-browser experience:
basically the left column (the one that is crucial for navigating the various directories) is filled with all help-patches found in all search-paths, sorted alphabetically (so directories are lost somewhere between files), and upper-case before lower-case.
if a search-path is a child of another search path (e.g. /usr/lib/pd/extra/Gem is child of /usr/lib/pd), then both the directory ("Gem/") and it's content (too many to list here) are listed, making the information accessible several times (adding more confusion)
i don't know exactly where to fix the problem, but a simple solution would be to only allow directories on the left side (and add an entry for "<searchpaths>" (probably an entry for "all searchpaths" and separate entries for each searchpath), rather than throwing everything together.

great
i have no special feelings for "------" (though i only saw it as a
separator between sections, rather than static and dynamic content), and
the dead code was there because of the first draft.
i'll replace the patch with an updated version

Looking into GNOME, it has a preference to put folders on top of files in
the listing, but I am pretty sure that this is off by default, and things
are mixed. At least in Ubuntu. Windows 2000 sorted folder first, then
files. Who knows, this might have changed in Windows, my Windows knowledge
stops really at Windows 2000.
I'm fine with doing folder first by default, i.e. accepting this patch, as
long as:
a) this line is removed from the patch, that ---- line separates the
static from the auto generated, there should be only one line like that,
not a second separating folders and files.
+ $current_listbox insert end "-----------------------"
b) the old, commented out code is removed. It just clutters things up
being in there. git has the history.

you are right that the problem first occured to me when dealing with Gem;
however there is nothing Gem specific to it.
however, i don't know why this makes the patch pre-mature.
as for sorting files and directories: here on xfce4, the Pd filebrowser
will sort directories before files.
however, i don't see how this would matter, as the helpbrowser does not
behave like an ordinary file browser on most systems anyhow; e.g. the
"Pure-data" and "-------" entries are quite uncommon.
i'm only suggesting to add "sections" for the various libraries/libdirs
before displaying all the help-patches.

Message:
I'm guessing this is related to your problem with the Gem abstractions
showing up in the root of the help browser. I think the problem is
elsewhere since its not happening with gridflow or other Gem builds, so
this patch is pre-mature. As for the relative merits of sorting files and
directories, that is a bigger, more annoying question. Windows sorts
directories at the top then files after, other OS file browsers that I
have seen (mostly GNOME and Mac OS X) sort files and dirs together.
Therefore, I think this patch would only make sense if that behavior was
Windows only.

an alternative is to separate directories from files in the root-column,
rather than mixing them together, which makes the browser somewhat
navigable (and was way easier to implement :-))

Summary: pdextended binary not runnable
Initial Comment:
today i installed http://autobuild.puredata.info/auto-build/latest/Pd-0.43.1-extended-debian-…
running pd gives me:
<quote>
$ /usr/bin/pd
sh: /usr/lib/pd/bin/pd-watchdog: No such file or directory
Error in startup script: couldn't read file "/usr/lib/pd/tcl//pd-gui.tcl": no such file or directory
</quote>
it seems like it should look for those files in /usr/lib/pd-extended/
directly running
$ /usr/lib/pd-extended/bin/pd
works

Summary: pdextended installs as /usr/bin/pd
Initial Comment:
Pd-0.43.1-extended-debian-squeeze-i386.deb (as downloaded today from http://autobuild.puredata.info/auto-build/latest/) installs the binary as /usr/bin/pd, thus overriding a /usr/bin/pd installed by the debian "puredata" package.
it would be nice, if PdX would install as /usr/bin/pdextended and use update-alternatives to point /usr/bin/pd to this file
