hi all
there was a thread these days on pdmtl mailing list about how to encode movie files, so that they can be easily read by [pix_film]. it turned out that this is not an easy task at all. some reported crashes, when loading movie-files. here on my computer i can load most of the files, though cpu goes up to 100%, when turning rendering on, even when displaying constantly the same frame. cpu goes down, when rendering is turned off again.
the only movie i found, that was working without issues, is 'anim-1.mov' that is shipped with gem. but also the other movie-files from the data-folder eat my cpu, when loaded.
i tried to locate the problem by compiling gem with support only for certain libraries instead of all. but any mjpeg/mov file i tried was eating my cpu, no matter if it was loaded by libquicktime or by ffmpeg (btw: is there a better way to force a certain library to use instead of compiling gem with support only for one library?).
in any tests i did, i didn't encounter any errors in pd-window.
i'd like document these issues a bit better in order to provide you detailed and usefull information. though i am actually uncertain, what is the best way to do that, since there are so many variables like different libraries, different versions of these libraries, different codecs/formats, even movies with the same format/coded behave completely different sometimes. any hint on that is much appreciated.
also i'd like to know, if [pix_film] is working well, what libraries have you enabled, what versions of this, how to you encode movies to be played by [pix_film].
cheers roman

That sounds like this issue:

Do you have an ATI graphics card? Maybe you could post your info to that bug thread.

indeed, i have an ati card, though i wouldn't have thought, that playing a videofile has something to do with graphicscard.
my specs: GEM: ver: 0.91-cvs GEM: compiled: Sep 20 2007 pd 0.40.2 ubuntu dapper ati mobility radeon 9600 fglrx 7.0.0
thank you for the hint, it's good to know, that its known. and hans: often when you send links, they get line breaks. is that avoidable?

could you please add this information to the bug-report hans mentioned?

i don't think so. somebody (@ pd-list, i think) once mentioned a "special formatting" to tell your mua to not break a long line, but when i tried it, it had no effect.
probably it is something you can only fix by changing your mua: mutt everybody....

yo.. i investigated a bit more deeply the [pix_film] problem. i found a way to get it working by some workaround.
after loading the patch pix_film-help.pd, i need to send [create, 1, 0, 1( in order to get rid of the cpu beg. it's seems, that [pix_film] does beg the cpu only the first time, when rendering is turned on. don't know if that conclusion is based on the correct assumptions, but the problem seems to lie within [pix_film]: when i instantiate another [pix_film], i have to turn off/on rendering two times again in order to get it working right. when i instantiate then a third [pix_film], again and so on.....
though, how this could be related to ati gfx cards, i don't have a clue at all.

Also, have you been able to isolate the problem to pix_film? It seems to me that the problem was related to texturing the data from pix_film, but I could be wrong.

i'll check again, but i need to know:
does it make sense to test that by just disconnecting [pix_texture] from [pix_film]? i mean, let's say [gemhead]-[pix_film] is working without issues/hacks, does that proof, that [pix_film] is _not_ the problem here?

yes this would be a test i would recommend.
