for Gem, i would suggest using "--without-ALL" as the first configure option, and then selectively enabling backends as needed. "--without-ALL" is meant for package-builders.

That makes sense. The question then is: what are the backends to include on Mac OS X? If anyone has an idea about what they should be, go ahead and commit directly to trunk/packages/Makefile. These flags are set in the $(gem_src)/src/Gem.pd_darwin: target
