Hi
If you are on Debian, you should always try the Debian package first, this should keep you out of all the compilation trouble.
and in fact, the gem in the unstable-branch is really up-to-date.
If you are not happy with the precompiled version (it doesn't have avi support, because libavifile is not cross platform) let me
this is something i don't quite understand. libavifile is not cross-platform. ok. the gem-sources are. ok. the gem-binaries are not. is there no possibility to add platform specific depends ? looking at packages.debian.org i noticed that - for instance - gem depends on libc6.1 for alpha/ia64 and libc6 for other architectures. so i guess it would be possible to have a (build-)depend for libavifile on i386 only. (this would especially be useful, as i have noticed major problems with libquicktime: a) arbitrarily freezes on 2.6-systems; b) wrong build-configuration does not detect the plugin-path)

know. I will do my best to make good packages. As long as noboy complains I assume the packages are working perfectly.

I think it is not a good idea to work around bugs or problems in other packages. What should be fixed (or ported to other architectures in the case of libavifile) are the broken packages.
Anyhow, I am going to think about a solution how to have libavifile support at least under i386.

i also think that problems in other packages should not be "fixed" by workarounds. but this was not my intention; it was more pragmatic: Gem is providing several ways to decode videos; debian provides the libraries to do the actual decoding; why should it be a bad idea to use these libraries if they are available ? what is the use of the libavifile-packages if using it as a dependency is considered a bug ?
this should probably go to the debian-packaging-system: wouldn't it be a great idea to have *optional* build-depends.
as for libquicktime i have submitted a bugreport...

actually there is a way to do that, and I am thinking about implementing it. One minor problem I have with libavifile7 on Debian is that it has like 5 bugs open that keep it from entering into testing. This will keep gem from doing so too. Well, maybe I just compile against the old one libavifile6
