Depends, but automake is a must, libtool, gettext and of course Xcode with the matching Command line tools version.

I just tried this quickly on a students' computer and failed at this step.

The README.txt says:

$ ./configure
$ make
$ make install

there is no configure, but a configure.ac file which looks like a
template for autogen.sh. Running that requires autotools? which
presumably have to be installed on the system via homebrew?
I'm getting a bit rusty on the OSX quirks.
