DV cams most definitely work under XP.  I use not only cameras but DV convertor boxes fairly often.

Your list error points to GEM not being built and/or installed correctly.  To the best of my knowledge no release from October 5 2005 was ever made by one of us.  Get the old binary from http://gem.iem.at/download.html

I just installed PD on my old windows laptop and I can't get the
firewire camcorder to work with Gem on that machine either (though I
may not have that machine set up correctly).

Here is what the console says:

load_object: Symbol "qtmlClient_setup" not found
qtmlClient: can't load library
load_object: Symbol "jpeg62_setup" not found
jpeg62: can't load library
load_object: Symbol "zlib1_setup" not found
zlib1: can't load library
load_object: Symbol "libtiff3_setup" not found
libtiff3: can't load library
GEM: Graphics Environment for Multimedia
GEM: ver: 0.90
GEM: compiled: Oct  5 2005
GEM: maintained by IOhannes m zmoelnig
GEM: Authors :  Mark Danks (original version on irix/windows)
GEM:            Chris Clepper (macOS-X)
GEM:            Daniel Heckenberg (windows)
GEM:            James Tittle (macOS-X)
GEM:            IOhannes m zmoelnig (linux/windows)

I can't seem to find the correct order to load the libraries in to get
no error messages, but gem loads...
Here is my order:
qtmlClient
jpeg62
zlib1
libtiff3
Gem

When I try to start rendering (send a [1 < to [gemwin]) and there is a
pix_video in a gem object chain PD crashes - so I can't seem to get gem
to read my digital camera from linux or windows!

Most unfortunate.

Thanks yet again for the help,
-thewade
